OUR VIEWS: Consensus Opinion

The Undergraduate House of Representatives was presented with two bills this past Tuesday that have the potential of changing the upcoming elections process for the better. Both bills dealt with the qualifications that a candidate must have in order to run for office. Students now need only to be in the process of completing 30 hours to serve as a major representative and next week the House will vote on a bill regarding the 60 hour qualifications for executive officers.

Young people finally care to vote

Last year, I considered writing a story about why we, college students, and our generation—the 18-24 young people demographic—were so involved in community service but were also so politically apathetic. The story was in the numbers. Between 2002 and 2005, college student volunteering increased by 20 percent, more than doubling the growth in the adult volunteering rate (according to the Corporation for National and Community Service), leading some to herald the rise of a new civic generation.

International women deserve more than Hallmark

There are 11 federal holidays, or days that all federal government workers enjoy as days off, presently in the United States. While in my experience most companies consider the number of holidays to be somewhat excessive, there are probably legitimate holidays that are not celebrated at all.
