Provost Schuster named interim president

Twenty days after Institute President Wayne Clough announced that he will be stepping down from his position after holding it for 14 years, the Board of Regents has named Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Gary Schuster as the Interim President. The decision will be effective July 1 following Clough’s official last day at Tech.

Presidential elections go to runoff

On Friday, April 4, the Student Government Association (SGA) Elections Committee announced the results of the 2008 SGA elections; both the undergraduate and graduate presidential races have gone to runoffs which end today at 4 p.m. While over four thousand students took the time to vote, this is a significant reduction compared to last year.

Baseball beats UGA in front of record crowd

The Jackets squared off against in-state rival No. 11 UGA in the mid-week game. For Tech, mid-week pitcher Deck McGuire (4-0, 3.00 ERA) squared off against the Bulldogs’ starter Alex McRee (5-1, 3.42 ERA). Like most Tech-UGA games, this one had a full storyline from the start.

SGA responsibilities

This week marks the end of the Student Government Association elections, heralding the beginning of a new SGA administration. Unfortunately, the election process itself highlights the deficiencies of SGA this year. While events such as SGA Week have increased the visibility of this crucial organization on campus, the voting record for the Presidential and Executive Vice Presidential elections speaks of a general campus apathy towards the very body chosen to represent them. Less than three thousand students voted in the Undergraduate Presidential and Vice Presidential races, even less than last year’s low turnout of four thousand.

The sheer number of flags in the Student Services Building demonstrates the immense number of cultures that are represented at Tech. Many organizations celebrated the diversity of the Tech student body this week by hosting various events open to the rest of campus. The events ranged from song and dance performances to speakers and fairs.
