THE END OF AN ERA

For this generation of Tech students, Wayne Clough is the only Institute president they have ever known. That will soon change, as Clough announced in an e-mail to students Saturday, March 15, that he is stepping down from his position as of July 1 to become the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the top administrative position at the renowned educational and research facility.

Students to vote next week on candidates, referendums

After a week of campaigning by candidates, Student Government Association (SGA) election polls will open Tuesday, April 1 at noon, giving students the chance to enter their votes for the offices of president and executive vice president, as well as their representation in the Undergraduate House of Representatives or the Graduate Student Senate.

Tech received sobering news during Spring Break when President Wayne Clough announced his resignation. Clough has been one of the Institute’s greatest assets, overseeing a huge expansion in campus curriculum, monitoring successful capital campaigns and consistently improving Tech’s national rankings for the past 14 years. During his tenure satellite campuses were established across the world, research expenditures more than doubled and Tech students from low-income families are assured a debt-free education through the new “Tech Promise” program.

WAM brings important issues to light

This March marks both Women’s Awareness Month (WAM) and the 11th year of the Women’s Awareness program at Tech. Started in 1997 by Jennifer Orr, the former president of the Women’s Student Union, the event was originally known as Women’s Awareness Week and included a week’s worth of programming to discuss and increase awareness of women’s issues at Tech. Since its inception, WAM has grown to include community outreach, service and informational presentations.
