about the Technique:
How do I become a staff member of the Technique?
Joining the staff is easy. By attending any one of our weekly meetings, one technically becomes part of the Technique. When your fisrst story is published, then you are considered part of the writing staff as a Contributing Writer.
When and where are meetings?
Meetings are held weekly in Room 137 of the Smithgall Student Services Building (Flag Building) at 7 p.m. Pizza will be provided at each meeting.
What experience is required?
No journalism experience is required before joining. In fact, many of our editors and writers never contributed to a high school newspaper. We welcome anyone and everyone regardless of journalism experience or ambitions.
What are the sections of the Technique that I can write for?
The sections are as follows:
- News - Covers Tech-related news.
- Opinions – Publishes the opinion articles of the Technique staff . Sorry, only senior members of the staff may write in the Opinions section.
- Focus – Th e magazine-style section. Publishes feature stories related to Tech.
- Entertainment – Focuses on the Entertainment aspect of Tech. Not restricted to campus, but covers Atlanta-area entertainment as well.
- Sports – Covers all Tech sports.
How much of a time commitment is expected?
It really depends. As a writer, depending on the story content, you can expect to spend anywhere between two to three hours on a story. Some stories require less time but others can require you to interview and attend events before writing the story, which adds to the time.
I’m not confident in my writing? What can I do to improve?
It’s ok. Not many of us are confident in our writing. We have many source materials and plenty of people on staff that can give you pointers on how to improve your writing. We will help you every step of the way.
Does it cost anything to join?
The Technique is absolutely free to participants! We have the benefit of advertisements to allow this.
Will I ever get paid?
Yes, eventually. Only members who are promoted to staff writer or higher can be paid. The chance for promotion is offered once a semester to contributing writers who have shown promise and dedication.
What if I don’t like writing? Is there anything else I can do?
Yes, we have many positions that are not related to writing. Photographers are always welcomed. Contact the Photography Editor for more information. Also, positions such as copy editors and distribution managers are available to students. If you want to help, just ask. We always appreciate the help.
My organization is hosting a big event and we want Technique coverage. How do we get it?
Just email the Editor-in-Chief or the section editor to which the event pertains. We will do our best to give the event coverage. However, we can not guarantee a story for every event that takes place.
I am in this great organization and want to write about it. Can I do that?
Sorry, but no. We try to keep all reporters neutral in the stories they write due to conflicts of interest. You are more than welcome to write for us, but we can not allow you to write for your own organization.
