Softball beats Ga. Southern

The Jackets beat the Georgia Southern Eagles in a doubleheader on Wednesday. The wins move the Jackets’ record to 23- 27.

In the first game, senior Aileen Morales, freshman Christy Jones and junior Blair Shimandle singled consecutively in the first inning. Jones and Shimandle pulled off a double-steal, then Jones scored on a wild throw.

Haller hit a double to bring in the fourth runner of the inning. The Jackets cooled off until the sixth inning when Morales hit a solo homer.

Humphreys earned a shutout and stranded nine runners and struck out eight batters to lead the Jackets in their 5-0 win.

In game two, the Jackets continued their offensive production. Morales led off the game with a home run. Haller later came up with a single that allowed for Jones and senior Savannah Brown to score.

In the third, the Jackets added six runs and seven hits. Whitney Haller hit a homerun for the No. 46 time of her career, tying the all-time school record. Senior Becky McCraw, freshman Amanda Crow and senior Stephanie Butler each contributed singles and scored. Morales hit a RBI double and Shimandle picked up two more RBI’s with a single. Haller went 6-7 on the day while contributing 6 RBI’s

On the mound, freshman Emily Schreck gave up two runs on two homers in the first inning. In the second, Humphreys entered the game in relief.

The senior pitcher gave up another run, but she pitched well through the rest of the inning by striking out the batter and giving up just one earned run in the seventh. The senior pitcher struck out five batters and gave up just four hits.

The Jackets will open a week long home-stand beginning with a weekend series against Boston College.

They will host the inaugural “Strikeout for the Cure” to raise money for breast cancer research during the stand.
