Fitting farewell

Words are inadequate and summarizing 27 years at Tech in a brief letter to all of the students, both past and present, is insufficient, but I’ll try.

Employed as a Registered Nurse at the Health Services, I took an early retirement as of Jan. 1, 2008. Not having known if this was going to go into effect, I was unable to say “Goodbye” and “Thank You” to the students before I left. Also it was Christmas break, so most to the students were away from campus.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell all of you students that I have been very blessed in getting to know you and hopefully to be of service to you. I have been astounded at the maturity, politeness, and the kindness of the students ,even while under pressures of school, as well as standing in awe of you students’ brilliance, wisdom, talent, and gifts.

My wish now is to say “Shalom” and to wish each of you in the past and now a lifetime of meaning, fulfillment, and joy spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. God’s blessings on you all.

Thank you sincerely for my work experience with each of you.

Campus crime can be deterred

I don’t understand all this violent crime on and near campus.

Don’t these people realize that having a gun or other weapon on campus is against the law?

Since our campus is a weapon free zone, shouldn’t that mean we never have any sort of violent crime?

Maybe it has to do with that fact that violent criminals have already made up their mind to break the law and don’t really care if they break one more.

Maybe they realize that if they try to jack my car in front of my house, they will face me and my 1911 with eight rounds of hollow-point .45 but if they jack my car a few blocks away on campus, they face me with my umbrella and TI-89. It is time for us to stop being naive about self defense and realize that all data shows the more responsible people that carry arms, the less violent crime.

It is time to give law-abiding citizens the opportunity to protect themselves not just at home but on campus and its surrounding areas as well.
